The new Curtis R. Priem Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center (EMPAC), which opened in October of 2008, provides students, artists, researchers, and audiences with opportunities to link the arts with leading-edge research and performance.
The building offers impressive engineering innovations, including a 300-foot glass façade heated with water-glycol mixture circulating in its steel support structure. The 217,000-square-foot facility is designed for the highest quality in acoustics, visual presentation, production, and performance technology found nowhere else under one roof.
Led by director Johannes Goebel, the venue inspires experimentation, cross-disciplinary inquiry, and advanced research. In fact, the construction of this extraordinary building has already inspired research that may impact the planning and design of performance venues around the world.
EMPAC is part of the Renaissance at Rensselaer program that was pushed forward by a 140 million dollar anonymous donation to RPI to improve the non-academic portions of Rensselaer. This anonymous donation was later augmented by Curtis R. Priem, Co-founder of Nvidia by 40 million dollars.
