Located at 870 University Drive, Pettit/Sommerville Residence was officially designated heritage property on May 16, 1988.
The Pettit/Sommerville Residence reflects the optimism and prosperity of the Saskatoon Boom period (1910-1913). It was designed by Frank P. Martin in 1912 and commissioned by Herman Pettit, about whom extremely little is known. A dentist, Dr. George Sommerville, bought the house in 1918.
It is an eclectic design, combining many features of larger mansions: a tower with a bell-cast dome over top and a variety of gables (some with half-timbering), a large arched porch, and a porte-cochere, a carriage entrance supported by fieldstone pillars. The house has three fireplaces, one of brick and two of oak.
By 1927, Sommerville had converted the house into a rental property with a suite on each floor. After the passing of her husband in 1939, Mrs. Sommerville resided in the house until 1959. Today a private residence, the Petit/Sommerville Residence stands amidst other fine homes of University Drive but is still a chief eye-catcher!
