Imperial Valley College was originally known as Central Junior College. But, the name was changed to Imperial Valley College by the Board of Trustee in 1951 because it was more representative to the Imperial Valley. It all began in Central Union High School in 1922 and two years later the second college was opened in the grounds that todays are known as Brawley high school. Unfortunately, it was forced to close during World War II because of the low attendance. According the Imperial Valley College webpage explained, “On October 4, 1960, the people of Imperial County set an all-time state record when they voted thirteen to one in favor of bonds to finance the building of a new campus,” now accredited by the Central Union High School District as a higher level of education, the Imperial Valley Community College District decided to build the college in a 160 acre at Aten Road and Highway 111. It was a big change to the community when the new campus opened in 1952 letting more students to come and study.
For Imperial Valley, this community college is essential because the classes are transferable to a university, which means that will help the student to transfer and the classes taken by the student still will count to the university the student would like to attend. There are not many colleges near the valley that offers this academic system. The campus hours are good if the student works part-time and still wants to continue with their profession. Imperial Valley College is very valuable to Imperial Valley people because it offers more than 46 majors and certificates.
The nursing program is one of the best programs in the Southern California. Even though is a community college it provides most of nurses in the Imperial Valley and a lot of nurses in the Southern California. There are cases, which people from other counties come to Imperial Valley to apply to the nursing program. Not even the people from Imperial Valley College got accepted to the program easily. Since it is a very demanding program, it asks you to have an outstanding GPA and the biology classes are very demanding too. The people who come to Imperial Valley College from other places to apply to the nursing program make it even more competitive.

History: the community college in the Imperial Valley has made a huge difference in this past years both good and bad but at the end the purpose is still here. Our purpose of existence is due to the fact of people wanting to better themselves as a dead desert. We are a desert with a lot of talent; doctors, Lvns, administrative criminologists, lawyers, professors, sociologist, psychologists, etc. the valley is well known to have the most Hispanics who want to better their selves, family and prepare for the next generations to leave something good. The college was built about more than 50 years ago it started as something small but in the long run we have expanded so much due to the want and need to improve life styles for our families. More and more people support and honor the community college to give back for what was done to give us all an opportunity. If it hadn’t been for those small groups of students and workers we wouldn’t be here studying and graduating for an outstanding Imperial Valley College. The imperial county symbolizes opportunities to me because we have the option to attend school and many of us do because they have got tired of what has been their life they want something that won’t make them suffer as they have had in the past. Now it has been a chance, life changing and a way to give back to those who did the most they could to make the education board take in consideration the opportunity to all of us. The vote was thirteen of one making the college building pass. Supporting schools and teachers made the difference as well although it had a disadvantage when the World War II started when the attendance lacked off due to trauma of being hurt as well as because at the time families had to work hard. The moments husbands had to leave to war no more students attended college nor high school or junior high because they had to be united to support one another.

The Imperial Valley College is now used to give us the advantage to be successful and become someone to better the county of imperial. We students go to classes to learn and graduate as the professors teach us to get knowledge for present and future uses. The college started as something small but now has grown to be something much more than just a school to some of us. It has become like our home especially to those who have been here all of their life working some professors don’t want to retire because they don’t know what they’d so without teaching since it was something they looked forward to and loved on a daily base. We use places like the library, cafeteria, world languages and dsp&s to do homework’s looking for help to secede in college and life. We use so many sources of the college that it has been something so amazingly crazy.

The College value has increased so much over the past years because we started small with about 160 acres and now we have much more I know that the school value price should be around $30 million or more. The more the property has opened and grows the more the valley grows to the imperial county. There are problems such as the teaching prices or even the teacher’s pays but there has always been a solution. There has been classes that have been canceled or taken away do to the lack of attendance or enrollment in classes as well as the major. The college keeps growing and expanding with 7,000 students a semester and a total staff of about almost 200 or so.
