The old West Virginia State Penitentiary was once one of the most dangerous prisons in the US. It was opened in 1867 and operated until 1995. It was the site of an infamous two-day riot in 1986.
Currently, the Moundsville Economic Development Council operates the prison as a tourist attraction and a training facility for correctional officers.
