Old Brooke Army Medical Center (Old Bamc)

USA / Texas / Terrell Hills /

Completed in 1937, this historic edifice came to life in the mid 1940’s as the “Home of Army Medicine.” Named after Brigadier General Roger Brooke, M.D., Brooke Army Medical Center housed the base hospital, medical units and extensive medical training facilities until 1996, when the new Brooke Army Medical Center was opened at the southeast corner of the Post. Built in the Spanish Baroque (or Renaissance) architectural style and located at the head of the parade grounds, Old BAMC is the focal point of the Post.

This Historic building is said to be extremely haunted. Voices and whispers are commonly heard throughout the building, especially the 6th floor which was the psychiatric ward. Ghostly figures are often seen gazing out the windows.

  • I had my daughter there in the early 1990's and the wards were still like those pictured here and no a/c in 110 degree weather. We had to get permission to bring a small fan from home. Best part was there was no nursery so as soon as my daughter was born she was handed to my husband and we didn't let go of here for a full year! After we left the new hospital was built and I'm sure there was more than one bathroom for 14 women! An experience of a lifetime!!
  • I've worked their for a number of years and have seen nor heard anything weird in that building. It has been completely renovated inside for office use. Even when I've been there at nights it's been far from creepy.
  • I was assigned here for two years in the 1960's I gave anesthesia and was a gratifying experience and learning experience. The trauma was extensive. faces and other cases were being constructed for years in some cases. The burn unit was a big plus as well. The Vietnam war followed and more trauma. The patients were always most brave.and we were so proud of them. Ken Williams
  • I was born at Old BAMC in 1954. My father retired at Fort Sam in 1964. When I was young BAMC was called the "Burn Center of the World". I am happy to see all branches now train their doctors/medics at Fort Sam. Bill Carrick
