The Old House

USA / New York / Cutchogue /
house, NRHP - National Register of Historic Places, interesting place, historic landmark, 17th century construction

Old House, Cutchogue, NY, traditionally dated to 1649. Originally built in Southold by John Budd, moved to Cutchogue in 1660, It is the oldest English-type house in the state of New York, and is considered to be one of the superb examples of First Period architecture in the nation. Its design combines the finest architectural features of 17th century dwellings, such as sitting room paneling, leaded glass windows, and a massive fluted chimney that reflect the work of a master builder. It was restored in 1940, designated a National Historic Landmark in 1962, restored again in 1968.

Despite the traditional 1649 date, dendrochronology suggests a date closer to the late 1690s.
