At 7:00pm 27th September 1986, Metallica were travelling on a bus from Stockholm to Copenhagen, where according the bus ran over a patch of black ice near the village of Dörarp and fell sideways into a ditch. Bassist Cliff Burton was thrown out the window and landed beneath the falling vehicle, which fell on top of him and caused his death. He was only 24 years old, and is one of the most highly-rated bass guitarists in heavy metal. The rest of the band and everyone else on the bus escaped with only minor injuries. The cause of the accident was suspicious as no-one around could find any ice, but the driver had been fully rested during the day and did not appear to have fallen asleep.
A marker to the crash site has put up near the closed restaurant, although the actual crash site was in a field a short distance up the road. The site is a small tourist attarction for Metallica fans.
