The name of the place means 100 beginners (meaning 100 families that started the place). The place was started by people that migrated from Ukraine (Kemenets-Podilskyi region). Because the land belong to Moldova, the town(place) had to be registered in regional city, where no one spoke Ukrainian language. The delegates from the migrated families did not speak Moldavian language, but new that they had to have at least 100 families in order to start new town/place. They were repeating over and over - STO(100) NACHALINIH(beginning) families.. So, the clerk filed the papers with what he thought was the name of the town – Stolnichani.
