The task of military ships in the remote areas of the seas and oceans, and the duration of their stay in these areas require a new resolve issues of medical support in these areas. Domestic fleet had experience in dealing with such issues through the creation of hospitalization, experimental vessels. Hospital ship was the design number 320 and was intended to provide not only skilled care, but for the rest mezhpohodovogo crew ships. The vessel was calculated for 200 guests and 100 patients, and in the form of sanitary transport - up to 450 seriously injured. For delivery to a vessel of sick and wounded had regular helicopter Ka-27 in search and rescue variant for which was equipped with a hangar.

Complete the vessel's 11,620 m, full speed to 19.5 knots. The first two ship "Ob 'and Yenisei were commissioned to the Navy in 1980, while the last two - in 1989-1990. The latter two were built on a modified project 320 / P (total displacement has been increased to 11,875 tons).
