A22 (motorway) (Via do Infante)

A22 - Via Infante de Sagres, usually known as the Via do Infante is a highway that crosses along the Portuguese Algarve region.

Makes the link between Lagos and Castro Marim / Vila Real de Santo António. It begins west of Lagos in Bensafrim, and passes near Portimão, Lagoa, Silves and Albufeira in Blacksmiths before intercepting the motorway A 2, which allows connection to Lisbon and Alentejo. From then passes along the Loulé, Faro, Olhão, Tavira, Castro Marim and Vila Real de Santo António, ending at the International Guadiana Bridge, which borders Spain.

Its first section was opened in 1991, along with the International Guadiana Bridge. The following year more than half the route was completed with the opening of the then highway 1 between IP Castro Marim and Guia (Albufeira), where still the 1 IP, 1 IC today. The westward extension only occurred in the following decade, with the opening in 2000 of the section Guide / Alcantarilha belonging to IC 4. A A22 was finally completed in 2003 when it was implemented nomenclature highway.
