Interstate 95 (I-95) and Interstate 495 (I-495) run concurrently for 33 miles in Virginia and Maryland, around the east side of Washington, D.C. I-95 is a north-south mainline interstate route from Miami, Florida to the Canadian border near Houlton, Maine. I-95 enters Maryland near Alexandria, Virginia. I-495 is a circumferential freeway of Washington, D.C. commonly referred to as the Capital Beltway. It connects major D.C. suburbs of Virginia and Maryland, such as College Park, Silver Spring, Bethesda, McLean, Tysons Corner, Springfield, and Alexandria. The road briefly crosses within Washington, D.C.'s borders for about 0.1 miles near Alexandria over the Potomac River. The Woodrow Wilson Bridge over the Potomac River had long been a major bottleneck on I-95, but was upgraded by 2009. It is one of the few drawbridges on the Interstate system.
