U.S. Route 211 (Lee Highway)
U.S. Route 211 is an east-west spur U.S. numbered highway in Virginia. It runs from I-81 and US-11 in New Market via Luray and Washington to Warrenton near US-29. It is designated as an arterial route and provides two important mountain crossings: New Market Gap over Massanutten and Thornton Gap over the Blue Ridge. It is one of only two highway crossings of Shenandoah National Park. Much of the road is four lane divided highway with three lanes in the mountainous sections. There are expressway bypasses of Luray and Washington, Va.
This was part of the original Lee Highway from New York to San Francisco, designated as an auto trail in the 1920s. Until 1980, US-211 extended to Washington, DC along U.S. Route 29.
