South Western Main Line (London)

The South Western Main Line is one of London's busiest commuter routes and runs from London to Weymouth, passing through Woking, Basingstoke, Winchester, Southampton, Bournemouth, Poole and Dorchester. It runs from London Waterloo station; the busiest station in England and the main services to London are operated by South West Trains, although Cross Country and First Great Western also run trains on it. Clapham Junction in London (also served by another main line) sees over 110 trains every hour.

The line began when the London and Southampton Railway was created to link London to the growing commercial port of Southampton. The company then expanded into the London and South Western Railway. The rival Great Western Railway helped build the Southampton and Dorchester Railway via Ringwood, but this later became part of the L&SWR line and now runs via Bournemouth to Weymouth.
