I read about the case every once in awhile - just like once a year I visit the Great War website (<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="greatwar.nl">greatwar.nl<;!-- m -->) to read about it and view the pictures - and find it haunting. I figured with all the press the case has received over the ensuing years, it would not be out of place to add it here.

This is the strangest tag I've ever seen:

It is a trash tag...

I came across a tag a few days ago where a user commented that he has been using this site (WM) since 1995.

Hehe.

That's one I have never seen. It almost looks like the image was retouched. Anyone know what this is?

Definitely not as impressive as the one above, but the photo of this and surrounding area is VERY weird:

Yeah, I hate it when the picture is that bad Carneyfex...

"Wild optical patterns"
Weird patterns indeed as from the ground there seems to be nothing "special" <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="tinyurl.com/ykh3svk">tinyurl.com/ykh3svk<;!-- m -->

Maybe the owner sold the topsoil and all that was left was what we're seeing now
from the air cause the ground picture is "older"?

My assessment is that soil conservation is well practiced in this area. There is much evidence in the surrounding locale that this has been done on other land parcels.
Just across the highway
<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="www.wikimapia.org/#lat=31.1647814&;lon=-98.3293962&z=17&l=0&m=b">www.wikimapia.org/#lat=31.164781 ... 17&l=0&m=b<!-- m -->
Just west
<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="www.wikimapia.org/#lat=31.1598697&;lon=-98.3455217&z=17&l=0&m=b">www.wikimapia.org/#lat=31.159869 ... 17&l=0&m=b<!-- m -->

Though crop farming does not seem too evident in this area, this webpage on contour farming goes a long way towards explaining soil conservation using that technique.

<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="www2.ctic.purdue.edu/Core4/CT/Choices/Choice15.html">www2.ctic.purdue.edu/Core4/CT/Ch ... ice15.html<!-- m -->

For this patch of ground the rest involves timing. Time the land was turned over, time of the last rainfall, time the image was captured.

I don't know why I'm doing this, but I've been following by eye the utility corridors of our town, marking the water treatment plants, pumping stations and electrical substations as I go. Everything north of Palatka leads to this JEA (Jacksonville Electric Authority) power plant grouping: <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="wikimapia.org/#lat=30.4268062&;lon=-81.5525007&z=15&l=0&m=b&v=1">wikimapia.org/#lat=30.4268062&;lo ... =0&m=b&v=1<!-- m --> and I followed the JEA power lines south past Palatka, growing smaller as they separate by each substation, until they finally meet the high-voltage lines from FPL (Florida Power & Light). It's interesting to get that little glimpse into the power grid. I was impressed with how efficiently the structure has grown with the development; I was previously unaware of how thoroughly and complex the utility corridors grid our town, even crossing broad waterways and stretching deeply through the rural areas.

Take a look at the lake. It had a pp polygon. I added about 40 dots to make it look halfway decent!
The old poly is still visible for a while.

On a planet with two suns, a green one and a blue one, you get shadows like that. :)

Either that or there was a time delay between acquiring the green and blue images; but that's so boring.

As a relative newbie, of about 7 weeks, I am still sometimes unsure about what kind of information to add to a new polygon to make it interesting.

The following bridge in the town I grew up in is a case in point:

<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="wikimapia.org/#lat=46.7601003&;lon=7.6270571&z=19&l=0&ifr=1&m=b">wikimapia.org/#lat=46.7601003&;lo ... &ifr=1&m=b<!-- m -->

The commentary in the tag to me is kind of interesting, even if the information is in a way trivial. Is it OK or even desired to add this kind of information to wikimapia?

Comments welcome.

I believe Horology's link above leads to a non-functional version of Wikimapia (perhaps what remains of the original Classic?).

Anyhoo, here's a functional link: <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="wikimapia.org/#lat=46.7600985&;lon=7.6270571&z=19&l=0&m=b">wikimapia.org/#lat=46.7600985&;lo ... 19&l=0&m=b<!-- m -->

In response to his question, I find a paragraph full of good information is sufficient. As long as it references the place its describing and doesn't veer off too far into superfluousness, it should be just fine.

IMO, of course!

There is something strange about Horology's links... ifr=1 is added to the end. Horology's post-

ifr=1 is added to the end.

<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="wikimapia.org/#lat=46.7600985&;lon=7.6270571&z=19&l=0&m=b">wikimapia.org/#lat=46.7600985&;lo ... 19&l=0&m=b<!-- m -->

wikimapia.org/#lat=46.7600985&lon=7.6270571&z=19&l=0&m=b

Brule Lake in Minnesota is one of those very rare lakes drained by two different river systems. In this case The Temperance River connects to the West end of the lake and the South Brule River drains the East end. See below.
