Some of the users will see a beta of roads, just want to have some opinions.
To not new users: If you would like to test this, just write here (I'll delete request later).

At this moment roads are visible/editable starting from ZOOM 13 and more.

Multiple segments selection and other properties will be soon.

Example you will see here <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="wikimapia.org/#lat=55.738805&;lon=37.455482&z=13&l=0&m=a&v=1">wikimapia.org/#lat=55.738805&;lon ... =0&m=a&v=1<!-- m -->, just turn on roads in View panel.

I don't see and option for "Roads" under my View Menu. I'm using FireFox. I would be happy to test this.

Great Idea !! :)
This feature will be very helpful for custom marking roads, specially those which are not already (smaller roads in rural areas) covered by the Hybrid mode.

Working fine so far :)

I have just tried this road marking feature, I find the marking too broad and the colour too red, may be because the marking is too broad and making the redness too shocking. The idea is a good one, but I feel needs modification. Also, everytime my mouse stops, it leaves a mark, even when it is in a 'view' panel.

hello,
Tried drawing two roads, however I'm having a bit of problem in naming them: editing the name of one road results in changing the name of the other as well. Am I doing something wrong?

When editing a name on the right pane, there is an "edit info in other language" link that leads to a dead form. A form that shows a blank page on submit.
Also, the user can add a name of any language more than once.

Love it! This is the one feature I've wanted most. One thing I'd like better is if the properties box popped up before you started marking the road. Instead of marking the road and having to go back and change all the properties (like switching a segment from "street, low traffic" to "courtyard"), you can select what you want beforehand and have it affect all segments. How it's set up now is good for straight roads, not so much for ones like this which involve a lot of segments:

<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="www.wikimapia.org/#lat=35.32493&;lon=-115.230789&z=13&l=0&m=a&v=5">www.wikimapia.org/#lat=35.32493&; ... =0&m=a&v=5<!-- m -->

Also, if the segment is titled/described, how will that information be displayed? I edited one segment with a title and description, then tried both rolling my mouse over the segment and clicking on it in Roads (view) mode to see how the information would display. I didn't see anything. Should something pop up, or is that still be ironed out?

The tool looks cool, though it still lacks functionality comparable to that of Google Earth path editor. For example, it's not possible add nodes (points) between existing nodes (points), i.e. the editor may expand only the tail of the path.

+ Suggestion: road title as SVG text along the path, following the form of the path. (Disadvantage: MSIE 6 or WIE 7 would require a plugin to render SVG.)

For once, mighty Mithgol, you may have made a small mistake :) . I have marked one of the world's smallest roads starting 15.193407&lon=74.014276&z=18&l=0&m=h&v=6. Click on any segment and you get "insert point" or "delete segment". Seems to work perfectly. Pls let me know how it works for you.

Hmmmm. Thanks koriakine (I'm assuming you enabled the feature for me). The feature seems to be working fine. A couple of suggestions though.

The road description mechanism could be made more homogeneous with the places description mechanism.

Also, the visible road widths based on the type of road, seem a bit too bold, even though they map well to the actual road in most cases, but zooming out does not 'seem' to reduce their width proportionally. Just my view.

I've some suggestions...

1.1- Before start a line (with "Start a line from here") the user must put the settings of the street that wants mark, like the size, the name, the number of lines, and only after this will be enabled to start the draw. (Currently is very hard make a street with a lot of segments and after this, return in each one to edit and put the properties...)

1.2- Or better, exactly after ends the road/street, when click in "save", the properties-window opens to edit all the line of segments traced. (Like the process to add places.)

2- As Mansur said above, i guess that the lines has a large width, what covers the streets and part of the squares and obstructs the view, like in this image: 000
I think that it could be a bit more thin, like this: <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="img237.imageshack.us/img237/5028/novo3bv1.gif">img237.imageshack.us/img237/5028/novo3bv1.gif<;!-- m --> <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="img517.imageshack.us/img517/7602/novo4bg7.gif">img517.imageshack.us/img517/7602/novo4bg7.gif<;!-- m -->
Or like what appears in "hybrid" form of Google maps.

3- Finally, i don't know if it already would be evaluated in the future, but i think that a good manner to show the streets in the "Roads View" form is like a common place, when you pass the mouse-arrow over a segment (or over a segment point), highlighting all the street traced, for example: <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="img240.imageshack.us/img240/3558/novo5it1.gif">img240.imageshack.us/img240/3558/novo5it1.gif<;!-- m -->

It's just my view. What you think, people?

And what i see better: <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="img517.imageshack.us/img517/7602/novo4bg7.gif">img517.imageshack.us/img517/7602/novo4bg7.gif<;!-- m -->

I totally agree with Naipe's 2nd and 3rd points.

The roads visible width definitely needs to be tweaked... preferably to be brought more in line with the roads shown in the 'hybrid' view in google maps.

And the roads should show similar behaviour to places. Initially shown in a less bold color/opacity, and changing color / opacity when the user brings the mouse over the road segment, and clicking it should bring up the properties like they do in places.

I specified this road:
<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="www.wikimapia.org/#lat=33.764378&;lon=72.762451&z=14&l=0&m=a&v=5">www.wikimapia.org/#lat=33.764378 ... =0&m=a&v=5<!-- m -->

and input its properties, name etc. in the dialog box that pops up after i pressed save. the good thing is that the properties applied to all the segments i defined before saving. the bad thing is that i can only see the properties in edit mode. There should be an option to click a road, and have the properties of all the segments that were defined together pop-up, just like places, in view mode as well.

Also, one should be able to view roads and other places at the same time, but I'm assuming that currently its not enabled because we're still experimenting with the roads feature.

After some usage of road marking function several questions arose.

'Street name' (segment name) should contain shortened notation, shouldn't it?

E.g.
'Independence Ave.' or just 'Independence'
'Red Str' or just 'Red'
'Независимости пр-т' or just 'Независимости'
'Красная ул.' or just 'Красная'

Is shortened notation necessary to be added in segment name? Or segment name should contain only proper name. So, maybe it is more easy-to-use in case shortened notation will be added automatically according to type of segment.

Automatic way will prevent
- errors in notation
- absence of notation
- diversity (even ambiguity) of notation

Also automatic way will accelerate a little setting of segment names. Due to we can avoid multiple typing of the same words again and again.

And the last question: what place of notation is preferable (more comfortable for search and view) - after or before proper name. I am asking due to Russian language permits both variants.

E.g.
'Независимости пр-т' or 'пр-т Независимости'
'Красная ул.' or 'ул. Красная'

In my opinion - first variant (notation is after proper name) is much better in this situation. Because proper name is primary data when we are looking through bunch of segments with the purpose of finding certain one by name.

Wikimapians, what do you think about all in this post?

Unfortunately as a new user I am unable to test this feature. However, when I've been here a little longer I'd love to be able to mark out bike paths with this feature. Additionally at my school there are many foot paths that are un-marked on Google Maps. Would it be possible to specify what kind of path it is? Some suggestions:

Bike path/trail (no motor vehicles)
Footpath
Snowmobile/ATV trail
Normal road (bikers & pedestrians allowed in USA)
Controlled access (no bikers or pedestrians)
Specify paved vs gravel? (important for roller skates, skateboards, or scooters).
should be able to either intersect or travel along-side normal roads (I've seen both)

hhyyjj163, as you have level 2 you can try road drawing feature.
Find it in "View > Roads (edit)" (see left top area of main Wikimapia page).

During testing of road drawing feature I thought about next desirable implementations:

1. Mechanism is rather handy (in general), one of missing small things is ability to select all connected segments by one click. It will help to set or change properties of whole street/path. In my mind after setting of global properties follows setting of distinctive parts (e.g. bridges, tunnels, etc.). Presence of ability to define bridge and tunnel segments is considered as useful, due to such information can help with planning of route (leisure, business or whatsoever).

2. Also some additions to segment attributes:
- road surface (asphalt, cobble-stone, soil)
- purpose of route segment (automobile, railroad, pedestrian / sidewalk, bike / cycle lane)

I agree that it should not be overload of attributes. So, I had just suggested and it is necessary to make right decision about priorities.

I find a lot of contributers to WikiMapi are not too sure whether condominiums, apartment houses or other residential buildings like flats can be placed under "common/Private house, residence" or not. This causes confusions resulting in a lot of personal solutions instead of standardised responses, which is the intent here. A very important geographical feature which is not only part of country landscape but a detrimental factor in the formation of urban areas is not found in the list of "geography". It is "river". Though the idea is not to expand the list of "types" indefinitely but I would still request a revision.

I am not sure whether my idea is good.
But maybe 'Route drawing' feature is more wide tool then just 'Road drawing'. What I want to say is that with the help of segments we can describe many objects of nature or human activity. Imagine to yourself: it is easier show river by segments rather than by rectangle or even polygon. We can describe more accurately river branches, tributaries, etc. Also pipelines and conduits are in mentioned category.

Wikimapians, what can you say about that?

I have a questions regarding correct usage of Route drawing feature.

E.g. we have two streets - one of them is continuation of another. We can act in two ways:
1. We draw segments for describing one of streets. Then we finish adding of segments (right mouse click) and starting new process of adding segments by "start line from here" menu item. As a result we will see visually united streets but in fact there will be two disconnected sequences of segments.
2. We draw segments for describing one of streets. Then we continuing adding of segments of another street by "start line here". As a result we will get one sequences of segments describing two streets.

What is the more preferable way for increasing relevance of future street searches?
How important is to add segments in such way that there are point in every crossing of routs (doing so can help than make continuation of secondary streets/roads)?
How important is to draw routs system in whole city in such way that system is presented as one sequence of connected segments? So, is it necessary to achieve connectivity of all routes?

The goal of roads drawing is:
1.Maping itself
2.Describing roads, streets
3.Later - to receive street addresses of a given point
4.To make routing in near future, including roads, railways, metro, etc.

Memphis, so we have to take care of crossings (it will be done also by drawing logic).

I have been using the road feature to mark up road in rural India that I know are not currently marked by Hybrid mode and are unlikely in the (near) future.
Do we see any updates coming to the Official Roads as shown in the Hybrid mode, that may require that I remove the Roads marked by me when the Hybrid Mode data is updated

Updating of maps (in all modes) as well as roads coverage is responsibility of Google which is providing maps material (Wikimapia isn't influencing on this process). You can ask Google regarding date of updates.

Regardless presence of roads from Google you can mark roads by yourself. It is not necessary to remove them in future. In any case IMHO there will be ability to show/hide marked roads thus you always can choose what to see. Moreover as far as I understood it is desirable to mark roads even at areas with presence of 'Google roads'. Due to we can describe marked roads with more information (type of surface, loading, purpose, available directions, lanescount, etc.) while there is no possibility to describe 'Google roads', besides in future in Wikimapia will be additional features based on marked roads (e.g. routing, etc.).

What about naming roads - I am trying to make it more obvious. But the most difficult is road change history.

bruce89, I disagree with you.

At the moment there are many sources of geographical information (only some of them work according to wiki concept). Today presence of data is not problem. The main problem is flexible integration of available data. So, Wikimapia is awesome example of integration information about different kinds of geographical objects in one place. So, the main aim is to create one map which will aggregate as more as possible geoinformation. Geotagging will allow in future to use different kinds of information (places, roads) to accomplish certain purpose. For example routing feature is is not sufficiently useful in case absence of either places or roads. But presence both roads and places will allow to create many useful geotools based on one site.

All IMHO.
Thank you.

This feature doesn't apply for the map of Vietnam yet? I can't wait to see it since marking roads here is kind of a painful job because roads and streets in Vietnam tend to be in about any direction you can think of, and many have the habit to prefer curves to lines.
