Formerly known as San Michele Bertelde and existing since 11th century, the church was restructured from 1592, when it was passed to the Theatine order, followers of St Cajetan. Building was begun in 1604 by Matteo Nigetti and finished in 1648 by Gherardo and Pierfrancesco Silvani. The theatrical facade in pietra forte has marble statues by Balthasar Permoser and Francesco Andreozzi. The interior is a Latin cross with chapels at the sides and in the transept. The 17th century works of art include an altarpiece by Pietro da Cortona, frescoes and canvases by Matteo Rosselli and Fabrizio Boschi, and marble statues of the Apostles. There is some magnificent 18th century embroidery.
