The Koifhus, former customs house

The Koifhus, the old commercial and economic focal point of Colmar, was completed in 1480. It is the oldest local public building in the city. The old balustrade, removed 20 years ago, has now been restored, thus giving back the Koifhus its original appearance. The ground floor was used as a warehouse and for levying tax on imported and exported merchandise. The first floor housed a meeting room for the representatives of the Décapole, the federation on the ten imperial towns of Alsace that was created in 1354.
