Site of the old Silver Dollar Bar and Cafe

Until the 1990's, this site was home to the Silver Dollar Bar and Cafe, a place now infamous for the shooting of Chicano L.A. Times writer Ruben Salazar by the Los Angeles County Sheriffs on August 29, 1970--the same day as the Chicano Moratorium March. Ownership of the bar has changed hands since the 1990's and, at one point, it was transformed into the Silver Dollar Theater, a venue that commemorated the murder of Salazar and the Chicano movement through the staging of an annual play. The site has been remodeled several times and most recently, it was remodeled and reconfigured as a clothing store.

  • ...as of 2016, it is the site of a Christian church. The plaque honoring Salazar on the store front's wall remains.
  • I visited the site about a month ago and neither the church or the plaque is there.
