  • The old name of Maribojoc was Dungguan or a place where boats used to dock. The word maribojoc is a corruption of a foreign word, which the people there could not decipher. For simplicity, folk started to call the place after a big aguho tree which they rechristen as maribojoc tree. I was born in maribojoc at the poblacion in 1952. I was born few days after the main commercial district was burned to the ground, including my late father's business. I was born premature because my late mother, seven months pregnant, had to run to safer place to avoid the heat from the inferno.
  • This shrine was built by slave labor by the Spaniards. All healthy parishioners during the 1800s were used as laborers to build the church. Each male parishioner was ordered to bring to the compound squared limestone quarried from the seabed of Maribojoc Bay. Failure meant they have to be whipped by the friars with the use of the dried tail of a stingray or pagi. The murals on the ceiling the shrine were painted by Cebuano muralists and maybe by force exerted by the conquistadores.
