Formerly a large municipal landfill / recycling centre, methane was regularly flared off to prevent explosions and peregrine falcons used to control vermin.

In 1991 Cork City Council voted unanimously (31 votes to nil) to close this facility. While it was still in operation by 2008, as of 2015 it is under development as "Tramore Valley Park" (a recreation and amenity park largely built over the previous landfill site).
