once one of Cork's major hospital, St. Finbarr's today contains only a number of specialist units - Blood Bank, convalescence, psychiatric, alcohol / drug depenence units, etc. This was formerly the Cork Union Workhouse - a 19th century institution where those in extreme poverty would go - or could be held against their will. Many deaths here during the Great Famine of 1845-1848.
