Point Cloates lighthouse was built in 1910 from local limestone on the hill near Ningaloo Station homestead. The lighthouse was particularly remote and the living conditions were cramped with the two lighthouse keepers living in one cottage with their families. It was automated and therefore de-manned in 1933 but unfortunately by the mid 1930s, the lighthouse was severely damaged and eventually abandoned. It is likely the damage occurred due to the tower's poor foundations, but could have been due to an earthquake. It was later sold to the owners of the 49,000 hectare Ningaloo sheep station.

The old lighthouse now lies in ruins, having been replaced by a steel lattice tower in a better position. The lighthouse tower is extremely remote and is best accessed by 4WD from Ningaloo Road. There are no formal tours and the tower is on private property but can be visited if permission is obtained from the owners.
