Salah Al-Deen Governorate is one of the nineteen governorates of Iraq. The governorate is divided into 8 districts and between 17 and 21 subdistricts. The capital is Tikrit; the governorate also contains the significantly larger city of Samarra. Before 1976 the governorate was part of Baghdad Governorate. The province is named after Salah Al-Deen Al-Ayubi, a Muslim leader who defeated the Crusaders at Hattin, and who hailed from the province.
