Established in 1881, Watkinson is a coeducational, college-preparatory independent day school for students in grades 6–13 (Transition-to-College). The school was started by David Watkinson who donated the land, Reverend Francis Goodwin and educator Henry Barnard.

The Watkinson School contains three buildings from its time as a juvenile asylum on the National Register of Historic Places.
