The Course
The South Lakes Golf Course comprises 18 holes of lush fairways and greens. The design of the course provides golfers of all ages, with differing skill levels, the opportunity to enjoy a round of golf without the use of motorised transport. The relatively flat terrain makes the course a pleasant walk while listening to the waves crashing on the beach in the background. The course is not long but still provides a challenge to the low handicappers as accuracy is the priority, particularly approach shots to the greens.
For the avid golfer, South Lakes is a mere 20 minutes drive from the Victor Harbor Golf Club and McCracken Country Club - ideal for those who wish to stay on the South Coast and play the fine golf courses in the area. Competition days for men and women members are conducted on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Other than these days, the course is generally available for visitors, corporations and trade days, but golfers are advised to book tee times through the Pro shop. Soft spikes on golf shoes are mandatory at South Lakes. The Club is on line with the AGU Golflink system. Practice facilities include nets, a putting green, a chipping area, sand bunker and fairway. Use of your golf balls is permitted on all of the practice areas and buckets of balls can be hired from the Pro shop on competition days.
The Holes
1st - Index 3, The first hole is a difficult par 4 heading toward the ocean. Any southerly wind certainly extends this 373m hole. The green is blind to the tee because of a right handed dog-leg with out-of-bounds coming into play on the left hand side. The brave hearted can try to shorten the hole by hitting over the trees to the right from the tee, but this is not encouraged being the first shot of the day.
2nd - Index 9, This hole is a short par 4, but it is very tight with out-of-bounds left and trees down the right. The fairway is picturesque with its undulating rolls replicating the sand dunes you hit toward. A miss to the right of the green with your second shot will place you are into a steep valley.
3rd - Index 17, The third hole stirs up the 'Eagle's Nest' with many a three being carded on this straight forward 442m par 5, especially as the wind is often behind you. Easy pickings for the big hitters!!
4th - Index 11, The fourth is a straight hole, but the small green can be difficult to hit. The sole danger are the large pine trees to the left of the fairway separating it from the 3rd.
5th - Index 15, This short, par 3 can be very tricky with cross winds often being the order of the day. The small green is protected by three bunkers, so selecting the right club is not easy when a southerly wind is blowing. Very often a trap for the uninitiated.
6th - Index 7, The sixth involves a dog-leg left with out-of-bounds on the left. Halfway down the fairway, pine trees align the grass on either side. The sixth green is one of the largest on the Course so a long or wide hit results in a very tricky putt. The secret is to stay short for an uphill putt.
7th - Index 1, The seventh is the most difficult hole on the course, being a 376m par 4 dog-leg right and into wind a lot of the time. Again, the green is very small and elevated with a large bunker to the left. A good tee shot is crucial on this hole, to position yourself for a look at the green for your second shot. If your second shot goes right, pull another ball out of your bag because the thick bushes out there are unforgiving!
8th - Index 13, Another par 3 with bunkers keeping you honest, especially if the flag is positioned on the right side of the green. This hole is also well protected by trees which form a semi circle around the green.
9th - Index 5, The ninth is the longest par 4 on the Course, but the fairway is wide. However, if you do stray left or right off the fairway, your next shot will not be easy through the trees and shrubs.
10th - Index 14, Only hazard here at the tenth is the lake abutting the right side of the fairway. A straight forward par 3 of 170m, with the wind behind you most of the time.
11th - Index 12, No problems with the eleventh apart from out of bounds to the right and the wind trying to blow your ball out that way. It is only 314m long, making it an easy hole for the straight hitters.
12th - Index 10, This hole parallels the eleventh as it takes you back toward the Clubhouse. Not a difficult hole, but your second shot needs to be accurate to the small green .
13th - Index 16, The Index belies this tricky hole, that has a dog-leg right and a water hazard left in the drive landing length. A good straight smack off the tee is required for any chance at this par 5 hole.
14th - Index 2, The fourteenth does not give up pars easily, being another hole with a dog leg right and out of bounds on the right. Your tee shot flies uphill for your second shot to a green which is back down another hill and out of sight apart from the top of the flag. A beautiful golf hole with a sloping green from front to back. A good test even for the A Graders.
15th - Index 18, The last of the par 3 holes and an easy one at that. The green is downhill from the tee so even a duffed shot should get you close, as long as you don't put your ball out-of-bounds on the right.
16th - Index 8, The sixteenth is a short hole, but with a dog-leg left you have to place your tee shot accurately to get a view of the green that is downhill, but elevated. Another small green making it difficult to hit into wind. Wise players will place their second shot just short, with a pitch and run third shot close to the hole, as the green has a front-to-back slope in it. A tee shot left will see you in all sorts of misery with thick vegetation and gum trees abounding.
17th - Index 4, The green at the seventeenth is tucked in behind a large tree with a water hazard to the left of it and a deep bunker up front. Stay right of the fairway with the tee shot and there should not be any difficulty hitting the green in regulation. Nice flat green to putt on without burrows.
18th - Index 6, Beware the 'Honeymooner's Bush' to the left of the fairway. Once in there, you are in strife! If you find your ball, it will certainly cost you a stroke to drop from an unplayable lie. With the Clubhouse in sight, one is spurred on to great things, at this straight hole.
19th - Index relaxed and friendly, Great atmosphere in which to regale your birdies and forget the double bogeys. Don't forget to come into the Clubhouse and enjoy a cold drink.
Green Fees
