Although the site has been fortified for centuries, the existing kasbah was built in the 16th Century by the Spanish to protect their interests along the coast.

The fortress features an impressive gateway added by Moulay Ismail.

Inside the kasbah are the ruins of a 17th-century mosque, the souks, the governor's palace and the northwest bastion with cannons and views over the Sebou River.

The capture of the kasbah from Vichy French forces was the main focus of the first phase of the Allied Operation Torch landings in 1942.

Despite the overwhelming advantage in men, artillery, armored vehicles and naval gunfire support, the small garrison of the kasbah held out for two days before being overrun.
