A town of 24,453 people (2004), the seat of Wieluń County, Łódź Voivodeship. Wieluń was the first target attacked by German forces during the 1939 invasion of Poland: on September 1, 1939, at 04:40, the German Air Force (Luftwaffe) attacked Wieluń, destroying 75% of the town and killing close to 1,200 people, most of them civilians. Thus, World War II actually started here.
