When the gas leaves the well it contains useless or even harmful impurities. Usually, the impurities are water, sand and heavier hydrocarbons but it can also contain nitrogen, carbon dioxide, mercury vapors and sometimes hydrogen sulfide gas (so-called "sour gas"). In the depressurization treatment plant (expansion) the heavier hydrocarbons in the gas are condensed in the form of gas condensate. This condensate is collected and transported to a refinery to be used as raw material. Also, sour gas is treated separately, e.g. at the gas purification (GZI) of the NAM in Emmen. Tthe resulting elemental sulfur is sold as a byproduct. To get rid of the last bits of water the gas undergoes additonal drying. The glycol, added during the process, is removed from the gas again and reused
