This is one of five Martello Towers in Cork Harbour. They were built by the British in the early 19th century when invasion from France under Napoleon was feared. The French never came but in 1867 the tower was attacked by Irish nationalists of the Fenian Brotherhood and captured briefly by Captain Mackey, the local Fenian leader.
