University Hall is regarded as Brown University's first building. Originally called the "College Edifice," until 1832, the building housed the entire institution, containing residential rooms, lecture and recitation rooms, a chapel, a library, and a dining hall. Currently, University Hall is home to several administrative offices, including the President's office, the Office of the Provost, Office of the Registrar, and the Dean of the College. The building was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1962.
