St. Matthew’s Church has dominated the Walsall skyline since the 13th century. The inner crypt, which dates from that time, is the oldest man-made structure in the town. It is possible that its Norman doorway could date from the previous century.

The church was originally dedicated to All Saints, and remained as such until the 18th century when it was rededicated to Saint Matthew.

The building consists of a chancel, a nave with aisles, transepts, an organ chamber, and a tower with a spire, containing a clock and twelve bells.

The earliest surviving reference to the church, dating from around 1220 is a grant by William Ruffus to the Abbey of St. Mary in Halesowen, for the patronage of the church. The grant was confirmed by Henry III in 1258.
