Yato is the western of the three villages on the island of Wale (Pukapuka). Yato means "leeward" - the original village name is Takanumi. In daily life, the islanders frequently call it Tiapani (Japan); especially in sports competitions between the villages, the villagers use the name and flag of Japan.
The village is separated by a fish pond in to an east and west part, connected by a stone causeway that seals off the fish pond from the lagoon.
