Franklin K. Lane High School is named for the Secretary of the Interior during the administration of President Woodrow Wilson. One of the accomplishments of his tenure was the formation of the National Park Service. At the time the school was built, it was one of the largest high school buildings in the world. Each of the four floors is one-quarter mile; walking four times around one floor equals one mile. The school now hosts several smaller magnet-type programs that are designed to support more cohesive learning environments.
