Jura Alunāna iela 5, the present British embassy, was designed in 1875 by Heinrich Scheel for a merchant called Carl Jansen. After the Second World War the building was occupied by different bodies of the Soviet administration. The last one was Riga city Kiroff district People's Deputies Soviet executive committee, which occupied the building from the 1960s. In 1992 the building was handed back by the Latvian Government to the UK Government.
