Paleros / Mytikas dump

Greece / Aitolia kai Akarnania / Kandila /

The open-air dump situated between Paleros and Mytikas, Etoloakarnania. It regularly sets on fire producing clouds of toxic smoke that depending on wind can envelope the nearby cities and villages (Paleros, Mytikas, Kandila etc.) as well as the coastal road, hotels and other touristic infrastructure. Locals and tourists are often exposed to dioxins and furans, i.e. the most toxic chemicals known to science. The health hazard for people living in the area has become extremely high.

  • who allows these things to happen? all that money invested in tourism development and we still burn garbage in the street?
  • We are very sorry for this situation because we visited that area and we found out marvellous places. But we noticed that often they are ruined by trash and nobody there did a separate collection of waste.
  • this is really disgusting... are the local politicians so careless?
  • I have been visiting this area with my family for more than ten years. What initially was just a little bit of rubbish burning occasionally, nowadays is a big mass of plastic debris almost continuously smoking. Clearly result of the intense development that has suffered this area during the past few years. This Summer I decided to shorten my stay in the area because my family's health was worrying me. Some times the smell was unbearable. Is there anything that we can do? and our politics... where are they?
  • It’s unbelievable! I was used to visit that area, but since this year I decided to move to another part of Greece hopefully without burning and toxic dumps!!! The smell was unbearable and even the sea surface -just in front of this dump- was covered by strange stuff. The local authorities and the government are doing nothing at all, and this is really sad!!!
