Australia's first offshore well spud in 1964 in the Barracouta oil and gas field and started producing in March 1969 piped to an onshore processing plant in Longford. Subsequent exploration of adjacent blocks lead to the discovery and production of Marlin in 1969, Halibut in 1970, massive Kingfish A and B in 1971, and Blackback oilfield. Since then 21 other offshore platforms and installations with a total of 600 km of pipelines were constructed. The latest development is the construction of the Turrum oil/gas field.
The Gippsland Basin supply 20% of Australia's crude oil requirement, and nearly all of Victoria's natural gas.
