Originally, Lockheed Aircraft Company started business here in 1928. There was also a glass factory (Mission Glass) with whom Lockheed shared a building until Lockheed took over that portion as well. Before WWII, this plant produced most of Lockheed's Orions, Vegas, and Hudsons. An oil and gravel airstrip constructed on the southern end of the property during this pre-war period was in use until 1941 when the P-38 went into production. During WWII, this strip was used as a parking lot and apparently never used again for its original purpose. The plant was closed in 1991, and by 1994, razed and developed into shopping. No trace of this historic aircraft plant remains.

  • How did Lockheed manage to get their aircraft over to the airport,which is several blocks down from this location?
  • Lockheed owned all of the property along Empire on the north side of the tracks including the southeast corner of the airport, the Yahoo campus, and the property where Fry's currently is.
