Formerly known as South Park, the first lot of land was bought by Hartford in 1897. In 1901 the name was officially changed to Goodwin Park in honor of Rev. Francis Goodwin, the first president of the park commision who first mentioned the idea of a chain of parks through Hartford.

Originally, the park expanded east to Franklin Ave., today it is bordered to the east by Hubbard Road. In that time, the park was not a golf course, but a series of greens and a man made lake in the southern half of the park.
