This site, named after a nearby inn (now closed) is principally noted for its Roman and early Anglo-Saxon remains. The main Roman structures were a temple or shrine within a large sacred enclosure ('temenos') and an ampitheatre. Slightly to the west, on the other side of the road, quarrying in the nineteenth century disturbed a cemetery which contained late Roman and early Anglo-Saxon burials. Two substantial complexes of Iron Age remains also occur.

The site is, at the time of writing (2008), under investigation by archaeologists from Oxford University. There will be a public open day on Sunday 20th July 2008. The project website is www.arch.ox.ac.uk/research/research_projects/marcham
