This is the original route 84 was to take to Providence, RI. Rhode Island apparently didn't want this, so Connecticut diverted I-84 north to the Mass Pike. Years later, Connecticut decided to build I-384 ontop of route 6, which acts as a connector to the Eastern section of routes 44 and 6.
