The cinema was named in honor to Oleksandr (Alexander) Dovzhenko (1894-1956) – a Ukrainian screenwriter, film producer and director, a pioneer of montage theory, one of the most important early Ukrainian and Soviet filmmakers, alongside Sergei Eisenstein, Dziga Vertov, and Vsevolod Pudovkin.
