From 1964 onwards, the village of Leven's population zoomed up as new housing estates were completed - including Westlands Way, Barley Gate and Mill Drive. Previously, it had been a small, sleepy and insignificant village halfway between Hull and Bridlington - it's main nineteenth century claim to fame being its four mile long canal which thrust eastwards from the River Hull shipping grain out and coal in.
