The modern town of Sibari perpetuates the name of the Greek city of Sybaris; it is a frazione of the comune of Cassano allo Ionio, in the province of Cosenza.

Sybaris (Greek: Σύβαρις) was a celebrated city of Magna Graecia on the western shore of the Gulf of Taranto. The wealth of the city in the 6th century BC was such that the Sybarites became synonymous with pleasure and luxury. It was eventually refounded as Thourioi (latin, Thurii) in 444/445 BC, and later became the site of a Roman citizen colony called Copiae or Copia. The town declined and was eventually abandoned after the 6th century AD. The archaeological site is located almost 5 km (3 miles) to the southeast of modern Sibari.
