The "Tyburn Tree" was erected on this site in 1751. It was a gallows, comprising a horizontal wooden triangle supported by three legs which allowed several felons to be hanged at once. The first victim of the "Tyburn Tree" was Dr John Story, a Roman Catholic who refused to recognize Elizabeth I. The executions were public spectacles and proved extremely popular, attracting crowds of thousands. John Austin, a highwayman, was the last man hanged here in 1783. There is a round stone marker in the center of the traffic island indicating the location.
