Jennings Building (2007, 2008 Indiana’s 10 Most Endangered landmarks) (New Castle, Indiana)

USA / Indiana / New Castle / New Castle, Indiana / Broad Street (IN-38), 1337

New Castle civic and business pillar Levi Allen Jennings spared little expense when he built his commercial block in 1877. Later in the century, the building was covered in cast iron, an ornate Italianate skin molded to resemble stone, making it one of the downtown’s largest and most fashionable structures apart from the courthouse. Jennings earned status as the premier citizen, employer and community-backer in New Castle. His downtown block matched his status in its architectural style and quality of merchandise. Jennings sold hardware, stoves and household goods, including the highest quality furniture.

The threat: This key corner building in New Castle’s downtown National Register district may be iron clad, but it is sinkable. The roof and masonry deteriorate as pigeons fly in and out of missing windows. The city has issued a demolition order. The owner, not financially able to repair the landmark, is willing to sell, but at a price so unreasonable that no one will buy.
