Habsburg Castle is the ancestral seat of the House of Habsburg, one of the most powerful dynasties in European history. The castle was founded around 1020–1030 by Count Radbot whose grandson Otto II adopted the Habsburg Castle name as his own. It is traditionally assumed that Habsburg meant "Hawk Castle" though some scholars believe the stronghold was instead named for a nearby river crossing ("hab" = ford). By 1276 the increasingly powerful Counts had moved their power base to Austria, but the castle remained in family hands until the Swiss Confederacy took control of it along with the surrounding canton of Aargau in 1415.
