Having lost the namesake medieval church in the walled city of Nicosia during the 1963-1964 troubles, the community gradually felt the need to build a new church. After the continuous efforts of Representative Dr. Antranik L. Ashdjian, on 25/09/1976 the foundation of the new cathedral of the Virgin Mary was laid next to the newly-built Nareg Elementary School on Armenia street. The church is built in a traditional Armenian architectural style, and was completed with the aid of the Government of Cyprus, the World Council of Churches, the Church of Westphalia and the faithful. It was consecrated on 22/11/1981 by Catholicos Khoren I and Catholicos Coadjutor Karekin II. It was renovated in 2005.
