Donald Dewar Statue (Glasgow)

United Kingdom / Scotland / Glasgow / Buchanan Street

A truly great Glaswegian.

Born at 194 Renfrew Street, Glasgow on 21 August 1937, Donald Dewar attended Glasgow Academy before studying at the University of Glasgow, where he gained both LLB and MA degrees. In his time at university he also served as President of the Glasgow University Union and was a member of the Glasgow University Labour Club.

A lawyer with the Glasgow firm of Ross Harper and Murphy, he entered politics and represented the Glasgow Garscadden Parliamentary Constituency for many years.

A personal friend of the then Labour leader John Smith, Q.C. (since the days when they both studied at Glasgow University) Donald Dewar had a vision of an independent Parliament for Scotland.

Whilst he remained, at all times, a Glasgow MP with the best interests of Glasgow foremost in his mind, he campaigned relentlessly and, through his tireless efforts, the Parliament was, eventually, to become a reality...
