  • ‘Halo-halo’ downs 19 in Laguna First Posted 13:19:00 05/24/2009 Filed Under: Health, Food SAN PEDRO, Laguna—Nineteen people, including children, have been rushed to hospitals in Pakil, Laguna after they ate the local dessert “halo-halo,” a health official reported Sunday. Dr. Jovenal Rallos, chief of General Juan P. Cailles Memorial District Hospital in Pakil, said they have been admitting patients suffering from nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea since Thursday. “They all said they ate ‘halo-halo,’” Rallos said. Quoting the victims, he said the halo-halo came from a known refreshment parlor called Lerma's, located right across the hospital in Barangay (Village) Tavera. Halo-halo (mix) is a known Filipino dessert made of shaved ice and milk to which a variety of ingredients such as beans, kaong (sugar palm fruit), sweet potato, and fruits are added. Rallos said the hospital's “nearest finding” led to the halo-halo, although he did not identify what particular ingredient in the dessert caused the poisoning. “They were members of different families,” he said of the victims, whose conditions had normalized as of Sunday.
