In the spring of 2004 Elsinore City Council adopted a vision for the creation of Kulturværftet, the Culture Yard, in the old shipyard area in front of Kronborg Castle. This heralded the start of a large-scale cultural initiative on one of the most unique sites in Denmark.

An open, international design competition concluded in summer 2006 marked an important step towards the realization of the Culture Yard. The first prize went to AART Architects of Århus, who won the prize ahead of 86 other Danish and international submissions. You can see the newest illustrations of the project here.

The focus of the competition is Stage One of the Culture Yard, which includes a new library, a theatre and concert hall as well as a café, meeting and conference facilities and a media workshop. Construction is expected to begin in the late summer of 2007 and to be ready for use in the summer of 2009.

The Culture Yard is part of a master plan for the area around Kronborg Castle and Elsinore Harbour which has been given the name of the Kronborg Culture Harbour. The plan redesigns the landscape around Kronborg, visually highlightingthe castle and recreating historical fort structures – in a modern design. The master plan paves the way for a large integrated cultural area in which cultural history meets modern cultural expression.
